Botox® and Xeomin®

BOTOX® and XEOMIN® are two very popular types of neuromodulators which we offer at Changes Medical Spa & Laser Center for treatment of frown lines, crow’s feet and other medical conditions. Neuromodulators are the most popular cosmetic procedure in the world, with an estimated 1 million new patients per year, and over 5 million patients who regularly have the injections. Both BOTOX and Xeomin are related forms of botulinum toxin type A, highly purified proteins which act by temporarily reducing muscle activity or glandular secretion. BOTOX® is manufactured by Allergan, Inc., while XEOMIN® is produced by Merz Aesthetics, Inc. Other related products available in the US include Dysport and Myobloc. All require a prescription, and are administered only by injection. There is no FDA-approved generic version of botulinum toxin.

BOTOX® and XEOMIN® are both effective for reduction of wrinkles caused by muscle contraction. Both are FDA-approved for treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows, sometimes called the “elevens” because they look like the number 11. Several other areas are commonly treated with Xeomin and Botox, without FDA approval, including:

1/2
  • Lasting Results

  • FDA Approved

  • Affordable and Comfortable

  • Safe, Quick and Easy

  • Horizontal forehead wrinkles

  • Wrinkles at the corners of the eyes  (crow’s feet)

  • Eyebrow lift

  • Bunny lines on the sides of the nose

  • Reduction of upper lip contraction, or “gummy smile”

  • Reduction of dimpling (orange peel appearance) of chin

  • Reduction of vertical lip lines (smoker’s lines)

  • Reduction of vertical muscular neck bands.

BOTOX® is also approved for temporary treatment of excessive underarm sweating, or hyperhidrosis, which does not respond to antiperspirants. Multiple injections are required in the affected area. The treatment is generally effective for at least 3 months, often as long as 6 – 12 months. Sweating is typically reduced by at least 80%. Additional non-FDA approved uses for excessive sweating include XEOMIN® in the underarms, as well as BOTOX® or XEOMIN® in other areas, including hands, feet, and forehead. Another option for excessive underarm sweating is miraDry.

BOTOX® is also approved for prevention of chronic frequent migraines. Neuromodulators are also approved treatments for several other medical indications, and used investigational for many additional conditions.

Side effects of neuromodulators are common but generally mild. Dr. Jackson minimizes discomfort of injection by use of the smallest possible needles, along with careful technique. Vibratory anesthesia or cooling is also provided on request. Bruising may occur after any injection, and usually resolves within a few days. Use of aspirin, Plavix, or prescribed anticoagulants will increase risk of minor bleeding or bruising. Minor headaches may occur after injections into the forehead. Having a trained physician planning and administering the injections is very important, as using excessive amounts too near the upper eyelids may result in temporary drooping, and too close to the lips may result in temporary drooling or indistinct speech.
