Hyperhidrosis is common, affecting about 3% of the population. It is often hereditary, and usually starts during adolescence. It affects men and women of all races. Although any body area can be affected, the underarms are most often involved. Abnormal sweating is often increased by stress, anxiety, heat, and physical activity. Hyperhidrosis can seriously impair quality of life. Hyperhidrosis causes embarrassment, anxiety and can ruin self-confidence - and clothing! Hyperhidrosis disrupts the daily routine, affects social plans and relationships, and can lead to feelings of isolation. It often influences career choices, and may result in reduced earnings and lack of job advancement. miraDry is not just for treating hyperhidrosis. It is an effective procedure for anyone who is looking to eliminate underarm sweat permanently.

miraDry works by eliminating the underarm sweat glands, immediately and permanently reducing perspiration and odor. Treatment is performed in the office, by a physician. The patient is awake during the procedure and a local anesthetic is used to minimize any discomfort. Treatment requires about an hour. After-effects are usually limited to mild discomfort and swelling and most people can return to work the next day. Changes Medical Spa & Laser Center is East Tennessee's only miraDry provider and Dr. Jackson is one of the most experienced providers in the nation. If you are ready to experience freedom from embarrassing underarm sweat and odor, contact Changes for further information.

FAQ

Who can have treatment with miraDry?

Almost anyone. Patients as young as 14 have been treated successfully at Changes. Patients with a cardiac pacemaker or implanted defibrillator, with severe cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension, or who require continuous oxygen, should not be treated with miraDry. Allergy to local anesthetics is rare, so patients who have such an allergy would require a consultation with an allergist prior to a miraDry treatment.

Can miraDry treat areas other than my underarms?

Unfortunately, no. miraDry treatment is limited to the underarm areas. However, other effective treatments are available at Changes Medical Spa & Laser Center for other areas of the body. Call Changes for a physician consultation about your concerns.

What are the alternatives to miraDry for underarm sweating?

Prescription strength antiperspirants are available, but can be irritating, and are usually ineffective for serious hyperhidrosis. Botulinum toxin (Botox, Xeomin) injections into the underarms or other body areas are safe and temporarily effective. Surgical interruption of the sympathetic nerves (endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy) is performed in a few major medical centers, but is expensive and requires recovery time. Oral prescription medications can be somewhat effective, but may have unacceptable adverse effects.

Tell me more about Botox for excessive sweating.

Changes offers botulinum toxin (Botox, Xeomin, and others) for hyperhidrosis. It is an effective but temporary treatment, lasting for about 6 months, occasionally longer. It is used for any area, including the hands and feet. Treatment requires multiple tiny injections into the skin, using the smallest available needle. Cooling, mild sedation, and local, or regional anesthetics can be used to minimize discomfort.

Does health insurance cover treatment for hyperhidrosis?

miraDry is not usually covered by health insurance. Reimbursement is sometimes available for treatment with botulinum toxin, as well as other therapies. Please contact your insurance company to determine what is covered.

What methods of payment are accepted?

Major credit card, cash, personal checks submitted 2 weeks prior to the procedure. In some circumstances a payment plan may be arranged for patients.
